Is it time to seek counseling?

Other types of Mental Health Professionals: The most common mental health professionals in the United States are Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Social Workers, and Professional Counselors. Each state has its own licensing laws and standards that govern each type of professional. While all licensed mental health professionals can help most people with problems of living, each group has its own special training in specific areas that makes them more qualified for certain types of issues. In addition, each individual therapist has a unique set of experiences that makes him or her uniquely qualified to work with certain kinds of issues.Psychologists generally have a Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree in psychology from an accredited school. Licensed Professional Counselors have a master’s degree in psychology or a related subject from an accredited school. In most states, they must complete a supervised internship period and pass a state licensing exam. Social Workers have a masters degree from an accredited school. They must have completed this degree and a supervised internship before passing a state licensing exam. (Each state has its own licensing regulations.) The social work profession focuses on individual happiness and well-being in a social context. It is also concerned with the well-being of the society that surrounds the individual.

Starting the process of individual counseling can be both empowering and frightening. I am very aware of the feelings that may be brought to the first few sessions. For this reason, it is the client who sets the pace initially. My approach is solution focused and proactive. Working as a team, we try to gain biographical insight and confront obstacles to change and develop skills, which will lead to confident decision making and lasting solutions. My work is characterized by intuition, compassion, optimism and collaboration. I try to be straightforward without being harsh, and encouraging without any pressure. I am approachable. I'd rather joke with people than judge them and, though I love to talk, I find listening as powerful.

I work with individuals suffering from depression and low self esteem, anxiety and anxiety disorders (fears, phobias, panic attacks, and obsessions), general life stress, the challenge of entering or exiting a relationship (singles and couples), divorce, parenting, career and money dilemmas, sexual concerns and sexual identity issues, addictions, anger management, family problems, step and blended families, body image, sexual abuse, trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, bereavement, and so much more.

I primarily use techniques adapted from psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral theory, yet I am always abreast of cutting edge research and new studies that will help me to help you.
