How Long Will Therapy Last?
Short answer: It will last as long (or short) as it lasts.
In most cases, however, cognitive behavior therapy for a specific goal usually lasts anywhere fromĀ 8 to 20 sessions. The length of treatment depends upon the type, severity and duration of the difficulty, as well as on the preferences of the client.
Whereas one person experiencing a mild to moderate level of depression for the first time may recover after 12 sessions, another person with a long history of anxiety, anger or relationship difficulties may find it helpful to continue treatment for 1 to 2 years or more.
Sometimes, clients wish assistance with additional goals after the initial problem is resolved. For example, someone who has conquered his or her anxiety may decide to change the focus of therapy to improving relationships within the family or at work.
During the initial consultation we will discuss how long therapy would be expected to last in order to achieve your specific goals.
